The Residence Inn by Marriott in Halifax receives mixed reviews, with a strong location in downtown but significant concerns about noise, cleanliness, and maintenance. While some guests praise the friendly staff and convenient amenities, recurring issues with odors, insect infestations, and operational problems like malfunctioning equipment and poor sound insulation detract from the overall experience.

Never seen or experienced such great General Manager (stay from Aug 12-14, 2026)! He was taking care for everyone, had a nice and personal chat with the guests and just left me with the impression which I so far hardly saw in a chain hotel like a Residence/ Marriott. Big kudos to him and his enthusiasm in his job.

The only star I can give this hotel is for the location. Walkable to all downtown restaurants and the waterfront. However the rooms all smell like mold or stale cooked food odors. The staff had explained its “this time of year” and many rooms smell like mold. Their help for this was a can of febreeze air spray… We had to switch rooms 4x before we could find one with minimal odor so that we could sleep. The downtown area was LOUD. Durty Nelly’s is right outside of your window - a busy pub blasting music until 2am every night and partygoers in the streets having conversations that you hear pretty clearly through your closed windows and doors. The room was clean enough but toilet was not working properly and beds were not comfy. Complimentary breakfast was okay at best. Workers all seemed a bit disgruntled except for one lovely front desk staff we only encountered once. Would absolutely not stay here again.

The location of the hotel is great as it is close to everything, and the room and common areas were clean. Staff was very friendly and tried to be helpful, but accessible entrances in main lobby and parking garage weren't working and my room was located on the main level across from the Nova Center and it was very noisy. Music and people on the streets made it nearly impossible to sleep before 3 am, and even when that stopped, the AC unit was so loud when it came on that it would wake you up. Wouldn't rebook here.

Normally a good stay. But this time was horrible. Arrived to my room only to find a indescribable health hazard in which the photos will provide. The patio door were covered in bird droppings causing us to not even touch the patio let alone open the door. When I called to ask to change rooms. The girl at the desk let it accidentally slip I got that room due to my rate. Which means they wouldn't change me cause my rate didn't match others that were in the same room type.. Pardon me my money is just as good Ty. Then in the morning after screaming from the washroom 3 times 1 minute. The house keeping lady whom I understand there was a language barrier walked in on me as I was dressing. Leaving me quite without words. Upon speaking to the front office manager. She explain she couldn't give me a discount. In which I feel is the lightest leap of faith they could have done. Then spoke about compensation of Loyalty points which I have not seen or heard from yet. This was as of Friday June 26. Next step if no response before 24 hours from this post will be a report or a inquiry to the health board.

The staff was very friendly and helpful upon arrival. Parking was easy to find, which was a pleasant surprise considering the hotel is located downtown. The location itself is very convenient. The rooms were acceptable. They were not dirty, but they were not exceptionally clean either, and some areas could benefit from better maintenance. The most disappointing aspect of our two-night stay was the smell in the room. We stayed in Room 301, located on the back side of the hotel facing a street with several restaurants. A very strong smell of spices was constantly present in the room. While I have certainly experienced worse accommodations, I have also stayed in much better ones. I would strongly suggest improving the ventilation system to help prevent odors from entering the guest rooms. Breakfast was good! Overall, the stay was decent thanks to the friendly staff and convenient location, but the odor issue significantly affected our experience.

I would not recommend this hotel. The only positive thing I can say is the rooms are large and the employees did their best. When you pay over $400 a night and your bed's mattress sits directly on the floor, that sums up the whole experience. I won't go into all details but trust me, it is 1 star.

Very poor sound insulation, with noisy bar outside until 4am on one side of the room, 2am on the other. Promised a call from the manager with a partial refund, never called us. FYI, if booking a 2 bed suite all are located on the same corner near the bars so we couldn't be moved. Cancelled an upcoming booking at the same location.

Rooms are a generous size with sitting area and kitchen. The basics: shower was good (water pressure, clean), towels were fluffy, bed was pretty comfortable. Free street parking in the weekends (parkade was full). We arrived late (like, so late it was early the next day) and had to ring a bell to get in. There was a bit of a wait until someone responded. In the end, the mobile key provided access before the front desk who wanted to know our name before letting us in. Not ideal when you are just really tired and I had messaged that we were arriving at that time. The hotel was kind of loud in the morning (doors, people) but hard to hold it against the hotel when we were trying to catch up on sleep after 8am. My rating reflects expectations for a 3 star hotel.

Where do I start. A hotel that seen better days. Many times no one on front desk and street people can get into unsecured elevator. Bar across the street blaring music so loud we had to call office to ask to be moved at 20:45 at night. Articles falling off the wall with old paint color showing Gym is very dated and dingy. Probably the worst stay in a hotel in many years. I asked hotel at at 22:45 to move us I was told to call in am. That sums it up. Boy oh boy.

I stayed at the Residence Inn by Marriott in Halifax and overall had a great experience. Suraj at the front desk was incredibly friendly, professional, and made sure we were comfortable in Room 502. His service was exceptional. Except for some noise, everything about the stay was really good. Thank you, Suraj!
